Lady Colonels Fall to No. 4 FDU-Florham 69-47

WILKES-BARRE – No. 4 FDU-Florham raced out to a 34-19 halftime lead and held off a second half comeback from host Wilkes University to post a 69-47 victory over the Lady Colonels Tuesday night in the Marts Center.

Wilkes drops to 10-13 overall and 4-9 in league play following the loss. FDU-Florham improves to 23-1 overall and remains tied atop the Freedom Conference with Eastern at 12-1.

FDU-Florham jumped out to an 11-2 lead eight minutes into the contest thanks to five points from Shalette Brown. Wilkes cut the deficit to three, 11-8, when Haley Mesaros (Royersford, PA/Pope John Paul II) scored in transition. From there, the visiting Devils pushed the advantage back to double digits settling for a 15-point advantage at the break up 34-19.

The FDU-Florham lead grew to as many as 31 points ten minutes into the second half before the Lady Colonels began to start a comeback and find some rhythm offensively.

A 10-0 Wilkes spurt capped off by a Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) layup cut the deficit to 57-37 with 6L45 on the clock. Wilkes would cut the FDU-Florham advantage to 18 points with a Kayla Brahm (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) free throw, but that would be the closes Wilkes would come as the Devils ran away with the conference road victory.

Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) led Wilkes with 14 points on 6-for-16 shooting including two three-pointers. Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Wilkes shot just 29.6 percent (16-54) from the field, the fourth straight game held under 30.0 percent shooting from the floor.

Three players scored 13 points for the Devils led by Brown's 13 tallies and 14 rebounds.

Wilkes closes its 2014-15 season at cross-town rival King's College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Scandlon Gymnasium.
