Wilkes Basketball Teams Welcome Eastern to the Marts Center Wednesday

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Wilkes University men's and women's basketball teams will take on the Eagles from Eastern University Wednesday in a Freedom Conference doubleheader at the Marts Center. The women open up at 6:00 p.m. with the men to follow at 8:00 p.m.

The Lady Colonels are 8-9 this season and 3-5 in the Freedom Conference. After battling with Manhattanville College Saturday in a close game throughout, Wilkes took the win with a final score of 87-82. The Lady Colonels are looking to revenge an early season defeat to the Eagles as they look to stay in the Freedom Conference postseason race.

Elena Stambone (Jessup, PA/Valley View) continues to lead the Lady Colonels offensively averaging 16.6 points per-game. Chelsea Brown (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) is leading the Colonels with an average of 8.1 rebounds per-game while adding 11.0 points per-game. Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) averages 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 43.2 percent from the field. Chelsea Smelas (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) averages 8.8 points and 5.7 boards per-game.

The Lady Colonels have lost 10 straight games to Eastern having last won during the 2010-11 season. The Colonels lost to the Eagles in December 88-49 in St. Davids, Pa.

Eastern comes into the game with a record of 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference. Gina DiDomenico leads the team with 45 three-pointers and is averaging 11.6 points per-game. Top scorer Meghan Nowak is averaging 19.3 points per-game and has a team-high of 9.0 boards per-game. Emily Lavin is fresh off her Freedom Conference Player of the Week performance as she averages 13.7 points, 8.8 rebounds while shooting an impressive 63.2 percent from the field. Lavin is tied for the Freedom Conference lead in blocked shots with 57. Eastern is averaging 69.2 points per-game, while allowing 63.3 points per-contest

The Wilkes men's team stands 10-9 overall and 5-3 in Freedom contests after beating Manhattanville 73-69 on Saturday. The Colonels sit in sole possession of fourth place entering tonight's game.

Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) continues leading the team with 59 three-point field goals, while also pulling down a team best 6.7 rebounds. Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) is not far behind in three-point makes connecting on 55 three-pointers this season. Freshman Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) averages 11.2 points per-game and 5.6 rebounds a game. The Colonels are averaging 72.4 points per-game and giving up 70.8 to their opponents.

The Eastern men's team is 7-12 overall and 3-5 in the Freedom Conference after falling 94-83 at Delaware Valley on Saturday. Eastern sits two games behind Wilkes for the fourth and final postseason spot.

Shaquan Turk leads the team with 14.9 points per-game. Tarek Hamzeh is the Eagles top threat from the perimeter nailing 47 three-pointers on the year. Austin James follows with 43 made three pointers this season. Eastern averages 74.6 points per-game on offense and gives up 75.6 points per-game on defense.

Wilkes defeated Eastern on the road 78-76 in December behind Stravinski's 28 points and six made three-pointers.
