Steve Finkernagel Men's Wrestling 3/1/2015 7:34:00 PM No. 11 Wilkes Wrestling Finishes Fifth at East Regional; Rea, Grossmann, Diesel and Evans NCAA Qualifiers No. 11 Wilkes Wrestling Finishes Fifth at East Regional; Rea, Grossmann, Diesel and Evans NCAA Qualifiers ROANOKE, VA – The No. 11 Wilkes University wrestling team finished fifth at the 2015 East Regional hosted by Ferrum College on Sunday afternoon. Four Colonels earned NCAA bids with two claiming titles and two third place finishes at their respective weight classes in the tournament. The Colonels finished with 92 total team points in the event. Delaware Valley claimed the team title with 123 points while New York University follows in second with 122 team tallies. Guesseppe Rea (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg), ranked No. 9 in the weight entering the tournament, broke through for his first NCAA Tournament trip winning the title at 125-pounds. Rea started the day with a 16-3 major decision over Jake Daniel of King's. He followed with an 11-4 decision over Mike Mui of Merchant Marine before a hard fought sudden victory over Connor Kirkegard of DVC. He finished off his 4-0 run with a dominant 12-1 major decision over NYU's Jacob Donato in the finals. Rookie Matthew Grossmann (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) earned his first championship at the Regional and subsequent NCAA qualification at 133-pounds. The No. 9 ranked wrestle at 133, Grossmann began the day with a pin of Christian Hilario in 4:12 in the first round. After a technical fall (19-4) in the second round, Grossmann posted a 3-1 decision over DVC's Zach Haynes in the semifinals. He would take the title with a tough 8-6 sudden victory over Nathan Pike of NYU in the finals. Kyle Diesel (Westtown, NY/Minisink Valley) garnered an NCAA qualification with a third place finish at 174-pounds. He opened with a 15-0 technical fall in the first round before a 5-1 decision over Ben Schweiger of DVC in the second round. Diesel would fall to No. 6 Zach Zotollo in 7-5 in sudden victory in the semifinals who eventually went on to win the title. The junior made up for the loss with a 3-2 decision victory in the third place bout over AJ Kowal to earn the NCAA bid. Wilkes final NCAA qualifier came at 149-pounds as Josh Evans (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton) captured third place in the bracket. Evans earned two one-point decision wins 5-4 and 6-5 in the first two rounds to setup a semifinal bout with No. 8 Derek Arnold of Ursinus. Evans would fall in 6:37 to Arnold who eventually won the title. He then posted an 8-4 decision win in the third place bout over Matthew Coppola of NYU to earn the NCAA bid. Other top-six finishers for Wilkes included Dave Oberrender (Freeland, PA/Hazleton) (4th at 285) and Mason McIntyre (Bethlehem, PA/Easton) (6th at 165). Rea, Grossmann, Diesel and Evans will now wrestle in the NCAA Division III Championships in Hershey, Pa. hosted by Elizabethtown College on March 13 and 14.
