Brownsey, Smith Push Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Past Houghton 19-16

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Carley Smith (York, PA/Dallastown) and Madeleine Brownsey (Glenside, PA/St. Basil Academy) combined for 13 goals and seven assists leading visiting Wilkes University to a 19-16 victory against host Houghton College Saturday afternoon at Burke Field.

With the win Wilkes improves to 3-1 overall on the year, its second straight victory in as many days after an easy decision against Old Westbury on Friday.

Wilkes trailed early in the first half 4-2 before three straight goals brought the Lady Colonels ahead 5-4. Brownsey scored twice in between a strike from Tori Kerr (Beacon, NY/Beacon). After Houghton tied the game at 5-5 with 10:55 left in the half, Wilkes outscored the hosts 3-1 over the final ten minutes as Brownsey added two more goals in the scoring run.

Smith then found the back of the net on three of Wilkes' five goals to start the second half giving the Lady Colonels a  15-10 lead. Houghton came to within one, 16-15, with 5:05 left in the game but goals from Brownsey, Smith and Samantha Lawlor (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) ended any hopes of a complete comeback and sealed the road victory for Wilkes.

Brownsey netted a season-high seven goals and added two helpers. Smith posted six goals and a team-best five assists. Kerr netted four goals and one assist.

Kellie Kalada (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) started and earned the win in net for Wilkes making 10 saves in 51:59. Heather Lorincz (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) finished the final eight minutes in the cage allowing just two goals.

Wilkes makes its home debut next Saturday hosting Maritime College at 2:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
