Wilkes Softball Drops Two at Cross-Town Rival King's
 
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University softball team dropped a pair of games at cross-town rival King;s College 11-3 and 5-3 in a Freedom Conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Betzler Complex.
 
Wilkes drops to 6-14 overall and 2-6 in league games following the pair of losses.
 
Wilkes tooks an early lead in game one when Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) hit an RBI double to left center putting the Lady Colonels up 1-0 in the first.
 
King's responded scoring four runs in the second and five in the third to take a 9-1 lead after four innings of play. Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood)' second career home run plated two bringing Wilkes to within 9-3, but two more King's runs, one in the fifth and one in the sixth sealed the conference win for the hosts.
 
Hoops finished game one 3-for-3 with two RBI's. Nicole Cumbo (Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) recorded the loss in the circle going 2.1 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits.
 
In game two, King's scored all of its five runs in the second before holding on despite a furious Wilkes rally late.
 
Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) cut into the lead in the fifth singling home Kim Jones (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) to make it 5-1. In the sixth, Sarah Birchmeier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) singled home a run before Jones added a sacrifice fly scoring Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) on the play pulling the Lady Colonels to within two at 5-3.
 
King's held on in the seventh despite one error as Wilkes stranded a runner in the inning with the game-tying run coming to the plate.
 
Wilkes returns to Freedom play tomorrow (Friday) traveling to St. Davids, Pa. to face Eastern in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
