Wilkes Softball Splits with PSU-Hazleton
 
HAZLETON, PA – The Wilkes University softball team earned a split with host Penn State Hazleton winning game one 10-4 before dropping a 7-6 decision in the nightcap Tuesday afternoon.
 
Wilkes stands 8-18 overall following the split while Penn State Hazleton moves to 19-11 on the year following the pair of games.
 
Wilkes jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game one and never looked back earning a six-run victory in the process.
 
Ally Paskas (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) and Christina Gambino (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) each finished with two hits to lead the Lady Colonel bats in game one. Emily McGrath (Upper Darby, PA/Drexel Hill) led the squad with three RBI's.
 
Nicole Cumbo (Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) received the win in the circle pitching the complete game seven-hitter with a season-high nine strikeouts.
 
Game two saw Wilkes battle back to tie the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth, but a late run in the bottom half of the frame gave the hosts the 7-6 victory.
 
Alex Hoops (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) and Jenna Graziano (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) led the charge at the plate in game two with two hits each. Kim Jones (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) pitched all six innings allowing seven runs on 11 hits in the loss.
 
Wilkes travels to Scranton, Pa. tomorrow (Wednesday) to face the Royals of the University of Scranton at 6:00 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader.
