Colonels Baseball Sweeps Penn State Berks at Home

ARTILLERY PARK – Wilkes picked up two non-conference victories defeating PSU Berks 5-1 in game 1 and 9-1 in game 2 of a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

The Colonels winners of three straight improve to 12-9 overall while the Nittany Lions fall to 6-11-1.

In game 1, Stephen Ruch (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) got things started for the Colonels in the bottom of the first when he laced an RBI double to right center scoring Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) on the play.  The Colonels tacked on a second run in the bottom of the 4th when Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) hit a sac fly scoring Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) from third.  Champi provided the big damage of the game launching his first collegiate homer, a three run shot to deep right center to put the Colonels up 5-0 after five innings of play.

The Nittany Lions plated a run in the top of the 7th but were unable to muster up any more offense as Forrest Jordan (Sullivan County, PA/Sullivan County) closed out the game giving the Colonels a 5-1 win.

Champi finished 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI's and Nick Preston (Duryea, PA/Scranton Prep) collected two hits from the plate.  Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) pitched five innings of two hit ball striking out six in collecting his first win of the season.

In game 2, PSU Berks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd before the Colonels tied things up in the bottom half on a Champi RBI groundout.  Slocum added another sac fly in the inning giving the Colonels a 2-1 advantage after two.

Ruch hit a line drive shot over the blue monster in the bottom half of the 3rd inning his 6th on the season plating Dan Pisanchyn (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) and extending the lead to 4-1.  In the bottom of the 4th the Colonels plated four runs with Jarrett Clymer delivering a two-run double to left center.  The ninth and final run of the game came in the bottom of the 6th on a James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) single through the right side of the infield.

Seven Colonels had hits in game 2 with Ruch paving the way with a 2-for-3 game including two RBI's and two runs scored

David Thatcher started the game on the mound for the Colonels allowing one run in two innings of work.  Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) notched his first win of the season going three innings allowing just one hit while striking out five Nittany Lions.  Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) finished the final two innings allowing just one hit.

Wilkes returns to action tomorrow afternoon for a key Freedom Conference game with Manhattanville.  First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. for Artillery Park.
