Surdy's hat trick leads Field Hockey over Keystone

EDWARDSVILLE, PA – Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored three goals and added an assist on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Wilkes University field hockey team to a 7-1 season-opening victory over Keystone College at Schmidt Stadium.

The Lady Colonels are now 1-0 on the season while the Giants fell to 0-1.

Jenna Skrinak (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) opened the scoring off of an assist from Taylor Ryan (Spotsylvania, VA/Courtland) just 3:19 into the opening half, and it was all Wilkes from that point on. Freshman Alysa Adams (Sweet Valley, PA/Lake Lehman) added her first collegiate goal at 12:52 off an assist from Skrinak, while Maura Anistranski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) recorded her first goal of the season on Ryan's second assist to cap the first half scoring.

Wilkes went into the half leading 3-0 and outshooting Keystone 17-0.

The Giants struck first in the second half, when Shelby Croasdale scored at 39:10 off an assist from Gabby Truesdale following a corner.

The Lady Colonels did not let Keystone enjoy their goal for long, as Keighlyn Oliver (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Coughlin) put in a goal of her own less than two minutes later at 40:55 with a helper on a cross from Surdy.

The rest of the game was all Surdy, as she proceeded to score three unanswered goals. Surdy first struck at 46:31 on a rebound from Ryan. That goal was followed when Surdy scored unassisted at 53:35 after dribbling in alone and lacing a shot into the right corner of the net. Surdy closed the scoring and her hat trick at 57:39 after Haley Coleman (Lehighton, PA/Lehighton) won a fight for the ball and crossed it from the right side to the left for a one-timer.

Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) earned the win for Wilkes in her first collegiate start before being replaced with four minutes left in the game. Amy Denmon suffered the loss despite making 15 saves in the game.

The Lady Colonels dominated the Giants in shots 34-6, and had an advantage in corners 7-5.

Wilkes returns to play on Saturday when it travels to Susquehanna University for the Connie Harum Classic, and return home next Thursday when they will face Marywood University.
