Surdy and Skrinak Lead Field Hockey Past Marywood

EDWARDSVILLE, PA. – Sophomore Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored two goals and an assist and junior Jenna Skrinak (West Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) added a goal and an assist to lead the Wilkes University field hockey team past Marywood University by a 3-1 final in a rain-soaked match on Thursday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

The Lady Colonels improved to 3-1 on the season with the win while the Pacers fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Marywood was able to get the first two shots of the game, but for the rest of the first half Wilkes outshout the Pacers 16-0 without being able to find the net.

The Lady Colonels got on the board in the 41st minute, when Surdy laced a shot off of Marywood goalkeeper Nicole Merrill that allowed Skrinak to secure the rebound and put a shot past Merrill for a 1-0 Wilkes lead.

The Pacers evened the score in the 45th minute when midfielder Leanne McManus found forward Cassie Stockwell wide open for the only Marywood goal of the game.

Surdy got the lead back in the 51st minute, when midfielder Maura Anistranski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) found her off of a corner, allowing Surdy to backhand a shot in from the top of the circle to give the Lady Colonels a 2-1 lead.

Surdy struck again in the 69th minute when Skrinak was able to take the ball up the left side and find Surdy all alone for a one-timer to give Wilkes the 3-1 advantage.
The Lady Colonels had a commanding 28-10 advantage in shots, with 18 of those forcing Pacers goalkeeper Merrill to make saves. Wilkes also had a 12-7 advantage in corners.

Wilkes goalkeeper Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) improved to 3-1 on the season, making seven saves in the game. Merrill fell to 1-2 with the loss, despite making 15 saves for Marywood.

The Lady Colonels return to action on Saturday when they travel to Arcadia University for a 1 p.m. non-conference match. Wilkes returns home the 19th when it will face off against Alvernia University in a 12 p.m. non-conference game at Schmidt Stadium.
