Late Comeback Attempt Falls Short for Women's Soccer against Rutgers-Newark
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University Women's Soccer team made a furious comeback attempt late in the first game of the 2015 Lady Colonels Classic against Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately time was not on their side as they fell by a 2-1 score.
Wilkes falls to 0-1-1 with the loss while the Scarlett Raiders improved to 2-0 with the win.
The first half proved to be very evenly matched, with neither team scoring and Rutgers-Newark holding a 5-4 advantage in shots. Senior goalkeeper
Kate Mahoney (Kingston, NH/Central Catholic) kept the Lady Colonels in the game in the first 45 minutes making three saves.
The second half proved to be much more eventful, with Rutgers-Newark getting on the board first in the 63
rd minute, and again in the 75
th minute.
Wilkes got on the board in the 81
st minute on a goal by sophomore forward
Micaela Oliverio (Carlisle, PA/Trinity), who won a battle for the ball on the right side of the net and was able to lace a shot into the lower left corner.
The Lady Colonels controlled the ball for most of the final five minutes of the match, taking the final four shots of the game.
Mahoney fell to 0-1-1 while making five save in the loss, while Scarlett Raiders goalkeeper Diana Carvalho improved to 2-0 with the win, making three saves.
Wilkes returns to action on Sunday when it will host Muhlenberg in the second day of the Lady Colonel Classic at Ralston Athletic Complex.
