Lady Colonels Basketball Drops 65-45 Decision Against DVU

WILKES-BARRE – Visiting Delaware Valley University saw four players reach double figures in a 65-45 victory over host Wilkes University Saturday afternoon in the Marts Center.

With the loss Wilkes falls to 2-12 overall and remains winless in league play at 0-4. Delaware Valley improves to 6-9 overall and evens its conference mark at 2-2.

DVU built an eleven point lead after one quarter thanks to solid defense taking advantage of several Wilkes turnovers. The Aggies lead grew to thirteen early in the second stanza before an 8-0 Lady Colonel run cut the deficit to 24-19 with 6:23 left in the half. Back-to-back three pointers from Haley Mesaros (Royersford, PA/Pope John Paul II) and Emily Sutton (Shavertown, PA/Lake Lehman) followed by a bucket from Missy Oertner (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) capped the quick Wilkes offensive burst. DVU took back the momentum again cashing in on Wilkes miscues on offensive to push the advantage back to double figures settling for a 39-27 lead at the break.

The teams traded baskets in the third frame with neither team able to muster much of a scoring run. The Aggies began the fourth quarter with five straight points and extended its lead to the largest of the contest at 59-43 with just over four minutes remaining and never looked back from there.

Sutton led Wilkes with a career-high ten points and five rebounds. Oertner added eight points off the bench while Mesaros finished with seven points and four rebounds.

Wilkes posted a season-high 32 turnovers in the game, which Delaware Valley converted into 31 points.

Eireann Anastasi led the four Aggie players in double figures with 18 points, four rebounds, five assists and 11 steals in 37 minutes of action.

Wilkes wraps up non-conference action Monday traveling to Penn Stats Hazleton for a matchup tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
