Third Quarter Drought Dooms Wilkes Women's Basketball at King's 77-47
WILKES-BARRE – Host King's College outscored visiting Wilkes University 27-6 in the decisive third quarter on way to a 77-47 victory over the Lady Colonels in MAC Freedom play Wednesday night at Scandlon Gymnasium.
Wilkes slips to 3-15 overall and 0-7 in league games following the defeat while King's improves to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in conference contests after recording the win.
Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood)'s second three of the first quarter cut the King's lead to 9-8 with 4:23 left in the frame.
Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall)'s jumper one minute later gave Wilkes its first lead of the game at 10-9 with 3:37 left in the opening quarter. After trading baskets over the next three minutes,
Jamie Campbell (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson)'s three-pointer from the left corner rang true to give Wilkes a 17-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter brought much of the same back-and-forth action until
Emily Sutton (Shavertown, PA/Lake Lehman) scored inside tying the game at 28 with 2:01 left until the break. King's answered scoring the final four points of the second stanza to take a 32-28 advantage at the half.
King's used a decisive 22-0 run over the first seven minutes of the third quarter to push its lead to 54-28 before Basile ended the Lady Colonel drought with a trey from the top of the key. The hosts kept the double digit advantage throughout the final quarter on way to the home league victory.
McFadden was the lone scorer in double figures for Wilkes finishing with 15 points including five three-pointers. Basile added eight points and three rebounds.
Kayla Feairheller led King's with 15 points off the bench including four steals and three assists. Tara Zdancewicz and Rachel DeTore each tallied 14 points for the Lady Monarchs in the win.
Wilkes returns to the Marts Center Saturday for a MAC Freedom contest against Manhattanville College at 12:00 p.m. on Hall of Fame Day.
