Wilkes Women's Soccer Notches Rain-Soaked Shutout Win in MAC Freedom Opener

EDWARDSVILLE – Junior Dianna Connor (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley)'s goal in the 54th minute helped lead the Wilkes University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout win over Delaware Valley University in the teams Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) opener on a rainy evening at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday.

The Lady Colonels improved to 1-0 in MAC Freedom play and 2-7-0 overall.

Wilkes held an offensive advantage in the first half, outshooting the Aggies 6-1.

The Lady Colonels came out strong to start the second half, outshooting Delaware Valley 8-0 in the first 22 minutes after halftime. During that period, junior Elena Denger (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) played a ball in towards the goalkeeper that D. Connor was able to deflect in past Aggies goalkeeper Emily Schukraft for her first goal of the season.

Wilkes' defense stifled Delaware Valley, surrendering just three shots, with senior goalkeeper Alyssa Young (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) up to the task on each one for her first shutout of the season.

The Lady Colonels held a 16-3 advantage in shots, with seven hitting their target for Wilkes. The Lady Colonels also held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Wilkes returns to action on Tuesday when it will host Stockton University for a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Schmidt Stadium, which will also serve as the teams annual Breast Cancer Awareness game.
