D. Connor and Towlen Score as Wilkes Women's Soccer Defeats King's 2-1
WILKES-BARRE – Junior
Dianna Connor (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) and sophomore
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) each scored one goal to lead the Wilkes University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at rival King's College in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels improved to 2-1 in MAC Freedom play and 3-9 overall.
Towlen got Wilkes on the board in the 62
nd minute when junior
Elena Denger (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) took the ball out of bounds, threw it in to junior
Brittany Gurreri (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown), who headed it toward Connor for the one-time goal.
Connor added to the Wilkes lead in the 66
th minute when Towlen found her on a cross for another one-timer and the 2-0 lead.
The Monarchs cut the lead in half in the 80
th minute, but the Lady Colonels were up to the task and held on for the crucial victory.
Wilkes outshot King's 13-10 with six hitting the target compared to three for the Monarchs. The Lady Colonels dominated the second half, outshooting King's 11-5.
Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Young (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) made two saves in net to earn the victory.
Wilkes returns to the pitch on Saturday when it will host Misericordia in a MAC Freedom tournament semifinal rematch, a game won by the Lady Colonels to advance to the MAC Freedom Championship, at Schmidt Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m.
