Second Half Goal Lifts Widener Over Wilkes Field Hockey 2-1
CHESTER, PA – Host Widener University broke open a tie game midway through the second half on way to a 2-1 victory over the Wilkes University field hockey team Wednesday night.
Wilkes slips to 8-6 overall following the road defeat while Widener improves its overall record to 6-6 on the season.
Widener took a 1-0 lead at the 21:09 mark of the first half when Eliza Newlin scored her fourth of the season finding the back of the net off a penalty corner.
Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) wasted little time tying the game at 1-1 one-timing a rocket past the Pride goalie off a pass from Haley Gayoksi from the top of the circle just before the half at the 33:39 mark.
The Pride then took the lead for good twenty minutes into the second frame as Kayla Herr notched the game-winner off another penalty corner attempt at the 50:32 mark.
A tightly-contested game all throughout with lots of physical play, Wilkes held a 13-6 shot advantage while Widener garnered seven penalty corners to the Lady Colonels six attempts.
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) finished with one save in net for Wilkes.
Wilkes returns to MAC Freedom play Saturday hosting Eastern University at 12:00 p.m. on Senior Day at Schmidt Stadium.
