Wilkes Field Hockey Celebrates Senior Day with 2-1 Win over Eastern
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University field hockey team honored its three senior captains with a pregame ceremony and then got contributions from all three in a 2-1 win over Eastern University in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels are now 9-6 overall and 3-1 in MAC Freedom play.
Wilkes broke through first in the ninth minute when senior
Maura Anistranski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) dribbled up the right side and shot high with her attempted getting deflected in by an Eagles defender to make the score 1-0.
Junior
Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) doubled the lead in the 32
nd minute when she laced a shot past Eastern's goalkeeper with an assist from sophomore
Megan Kane (Kingston, PA/Wyoming Valley West).
The Eagles cut the lead in half in the 52
nd minute but were unable to break the Lady Colonels back line again.
Wilkes dominated possession in the game, outshooting Eastern 18-4 in the game and holding an 11 to three advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made three saves in net.
The Lady Colonels return to action on Wednesday when they host King's for a 7 p.m. MAC Freedom game at Schmidt Stadium.
