Wilkes Women's Soccer Clinches Playoff Spot with 1-0 win over DeSales
EDWARDSVILLE – Senior
Caroline Connor (Penfield, NY/Penfield)'s 70
th minute goal was all the Lady Colonels needed in a frigid 1-0 win over DeSales University in a rematch of last year's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) championship game on Saturday evening at Schmidt Stadium. With the win, Wilkes clinched a spot in the upcoming MAC Freedom tournament, with final seeding yet to be decided.
The Lady Colonels improved to 4-2 in MAC Freedom play and 5-10 overall.
Neither team was able to gain an advantage in the first half but junior
Shelby Trumbo (Landingville, PA/Schuylkill Haven) came inches from giving Wilkes a 1-0 final when she headed a shot but hit the post in the 21
st minute.
Connor had two chances to put the Lady Colonels on top in the 70
th minute. Her first shot from the right side of the box hit the post and was collected by sophomore
Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) who fed it back to Connor for the winning goal.
Wilkes' defense stifled DeSales all night, allowing just six shots, only four of which reached the net. All four chances were handled by senior
Alyssa Young (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) for her second consecutive shutout, third of the season.
The Lady Colonels return to action when they host SUNY Cortland in a 4 p.m. non-conference contest at Schmidt Stadium.
