Late Rally Falls Short in Wilkes Field Hockey 3-2 Loss at Elizabethtown
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – Host Elizabethtown College scored two goals in the first half and added the game-winning tally in the second period holding off a late Wilkes University rally to post a 3-2 non-conference win Wednesday afternoon at Wolf Field.
Wilkes drops to 8-4 overall following the defeat. The loss snaps the Lady Colonels five game winning streak. Elizabethtown improves to 6-4 overall after the home victory.
The Blue Jays opened a 2-0 lead midway through the first half thanks to goals from Allison McLamb and Megan Eppley at the 14:31 and 25:59 mark respectively. Wilkes responded late in the second period when
Gianna Gennetts (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) notched her sixth goal of the season lifting a shot from the left of the circle over the goalie into the back of the cage at 55:44.
McLamb scored again for Elizabethtown ten minutes later pushing the lead to 3-1 before
Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season with a rocket just inside the circle with :20 remaining. Wilkes was unable to muster another shot opportunity over the final twenty seconds as Elizabethtown held on for the one-goal victory.
Elizabethtown held a 15-3 shot advantage in the contest while garnering 12 penalty corners. For the first time this season Wilkes was held without a penalty corner situation.
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) finished with nine saves in net for Wilkes playing all seventy minutes.
Wilkes returns to MAC Freedom play Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. matchup at Manhattanville College. Wilkes stands a perfect 2-0 in league play thus far this season.
