Three-Pointers Lift Drew over Wilkes Men's Basketball 90-84
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's basketball team shot 42.3 percent (11-26) from beyond the three-point line, but Drew University attempted 37 such shots, connecting on 16 of them (43.2 percent) as the Colonels fell by a 90-84 final at the Marts Center on Wednesday evening.
Wilkes fell to 4-3 with the loss.
Neither team was able to secure an extended run through the first 7:53 with the game tied 18-18 following a
Tommy Bowen (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) layup. The Colonels started to grab the momentum after the shot, going on an 8-0 run to take a 24-18 lead with 9:26 until halftime.
The Rangers cut the lead to 26-25 with 7:15 remaining, but the Colonels finished the half on a 15-10 run to take a 41-35 lead into halftime.
Mark Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) hit a three-pointer extending the lead to 44-35 to start the half, but Drew pushed out a 10-0 run to take a 45-44 lead with 16:31 left on the clock. Wilkes commenced a 12-4 run to take a seven point lead at 56-49 with 13:42 left.
The Rangers chipped away at the lead with a 14-5 run over the next three minutes to take a 63-61 lead with 10:22 left, but they were unable to take a larger lead as the two teams exchanged leads over the two minutes.
Drew began to pull away at the 7:49 minute, using a jumper and two three-pointers to take a 74-67 lead with 6:03 on the clock. The Colonels cut the lead to two with an 11-6 run to make the score 80-78 following a three-pointer by Bowen. The Rangers hit a pair of free throws following a foul on the defensive end, and Bowen appeared to give Wilkes all the momentum following a monster dunk after storming through the paint, but Drew hit five-of-six free throws in the final 26 seconds to put the game away.
The Colonels were led by Bowen's 17 points.
Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and
Connor Evans (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) both added 12 points, with Robinson contributing six rebounds and Evans finishing with three assists.
The Rangers were led by Riley Collins, who contributed a game-high 21 points off the bench on 6-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Dan Roibal finished with 20 points and five assists to go with four rebounds, Darius Reiter added 19 points on 6-15 shooting from the three-point line, Nate Aldrich totaled 12 points and 16 assists, while Yonathan Napoleon had 10 points and five assists.
Wilkes returns to the hardwood on Tuesday when they travel to Clarks Summit University for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
