MADISON, NJ – Host FDU-Florham outscored Wilkes University 40-24 over the second and third quarter on way to a 69-54 victory Tuesday night in MAC Freedom women's basketball action.
With the loss Wilkes drops to 4-20 overall and 1-12 in league games. FDU-Florham, the defending MAC Freedom champion, improves to 18-6 overall and 10-3 in conference contests.
Wilkes kept things close midway through the first quarter when
Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic) drained a jumper with 5:04 on the clock putting the Lady Colonels ahead 10-5. The Devils then outscored Wilkes 8-2 over the final five minutes of the frame to take a slim 13-12 lead after one quarter of play.
It was between the second and third quarters that the game fell away from Wilkes as FDU-Florham used a 20-11 advantage over the second quarter to take a ten point lead to the break. The hosts added to the advantage after the break pushing the lead to over twenty points outscoring Wilkes 20-13 over the third stanza.
Wilkes continued to chip away at the FDU-Florham lead using an
Emily Sutton (Shavertown, PA/Lake Lehman) transition layup to cut the deficit to 61-51 with just under five minutes left to play, but the Devils kept just enough pressure on the offensive end to seal the league home victory.
Cara Basile (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led Wilkes with 12 points and six rebounds. Sutton followed with ten points and a team-best seven boards off the Lady Colonel bench.
FDU-Florham saw four players reach double figures topped by Shalette Brown's 18 points and game-high 21 rebounds.
Wilkes closes out its 2015-16 season on Saturday hosting cross-town rival King's College on Senior Day at 1:00 p.m. at the Marts Center.
