Men's Basketball to Travel to DeSales for Opening Round of MAC Freedom Tournament

WILKES-BARRE – The fourth-seeded Wilkes University men's basketball team is set to travel to Center Valley, Pa. to take on the top-seeded DeSales University Bulldogs in the first round of the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) tournament on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. Ticket price are as follows: $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for students, and children under six years enter for free.

This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season, with the Bulldogs winning each matchup. Wilkes lost the first meeting in Center Valley on January 20th by the slimmest of margins, falling 73-72. DeSales also won the second matchup when they came to the Marts Center on February 10th by a final score of 76-67.

The Colonels and Bulldogs have met once in the playoffs in the last eight years, with DeSales defeating Wilkes in the MAC Freedom championship in 2008-2009 in Center Valley by a 74-62 final. This is the Colonels first trip to the conference tournament since the 2011-2012 season when Wilkes defeated Eastern University in a 103-98 overtime thriller in the first round, but then fell to Misericordia by a 65-46 final in the MAC Freedom final. The Colonels are 2-6 in regular season games played at DeSales in the last eight seasons.

Wilkes is led by Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona), who is averaging 16.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 34.8 minutes-per-game this season. The Colonels are also led by Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional), who is averaging 14.0 points and 2.5 assists this season, and Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston), who is averaging 13.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists this season. The Colonels finished the regular season leading both MAC conferences in three-pointers made, converting 262 attempts this season.

The Bulldogs are led by senior forward Cody Deal, who is averaging 14.0 points and 4.2 rebounds-per-game. Kuity Slanger (12.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.9 assists) and Brian Laird (12.0 points) round out the double digit scorers for DeSales. The Bulldogs ranked second in the MAC Freedom in scoring margin, outscoring their opponents by an average of 5.8 points.
