Five Finish in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight
DALLAS, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's basketball team's hot play continued on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Misericordia University 90-85 to continue their playoff push with all five starters finishing with double-figure scoring totals.
The victory, the Colonels sixth in their last seven games, moves them to 11-10 overall and 6-4 in MAC Freedom play.
Misericordia led by as many as 18 in the first half, but Wilkes finished the last eight minutes of the half on a 24-12 run and entered the half down 46-40.
With 15 minutes remaining and the Cougars leading 56-48, the Colonels started a 25-12 run which gave them their first lead since 17:17 in the first half, taking a 73-68 lead with 6:34 left in the game. Both teams retook the lead throughout the final five minutes, but
Alec Wizar (Lebanon, PA/Annville Cleona) provided the dagger as he has all season, hitting a clutch three-pointer to make it a two-possession game 86-81 with 1:54 remaining.
Misericordia wouldn't go down without a fight, as Griffin Sponaugle responded with a three-pointer of his own to make the score 86-84 with 1:35 on the clock. The Cougar's Jason Kenny, the team's leading scorer, got to the free-throw line with 1:15 left, but missed the front end and converted the second, leaving Wilkes with a slim 86-85 lead.
Marcus Robinson (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) followed with a jumper to give the Colonels an 88-85 lead. Both teams exchanged turnovers following the jumper, and Sponaugle missed the tying three-pointer on the following possession.
Connor Evans (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) was fouled on the inbound pass, giving him the opportunity to all but finish the game as there were only 11 seconds remaining in the game. Evans hit both free throw attempts, locking up the team's fifth straight win, and avenging their defeat earlier this season.
Wilkes was led by Robinson, who finished the game with a game-high 24 points and four assists. Evans (17 points, six assists),
Zachary Brunner (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) (12 points),
Steve Stravinski (Pittston, PA/Pittston) (11 points, six rebounds), and Wizar (10 points, six rebounds), all finished in double-figures. The Colonels turned 13 Misericordia turnovers into 15 points.
The Cougars were led by Kenny, who finished with 23 points and seven assists. James Hawk (15 points) and Sponaugle (11 points) also finished in double-figures while D.J. Marlow added 15 points off the bench.
Wilkes returns to the court on Wednesday when it hosts DeSales for a MAC Freedom game at 8 p.m. at the Marts Center.
