Wilkes Softball Drops Pair at Keystone
La Plume, Pa. - The Wilkes University softball team surrendered rally's early in both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday evening, dropping the first game 9-6 and the second game 13-5 in five innings.
The Lady Colonels are now 5-7 on the season.
In the first game, Keystone plated a run in the bottom of the first and Wilkes responded in the top of the second to tie the score. The Giants scored seven runs with eight two-out hits in the bottom of the second to take an 8-1 lead.
The Lady Colonels plated two runs in the top of the third to cut the lead to 8-3 and scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 8-5.
Keystone added a run in the bottom of the fifth while Wilkes added the final run in the top of the sixth.
Lady Colonels' starting pitcher
Nicole Cumbo (Wyoming, PA/Wyoming Area) went 1.2 innings, surrendering six runs (five earned) on 12 hits with zero walks and one strikeout.
Junior catcher/outfielder
Lacey Bixler (Williamstown, PA/Williams Valley) led Wilkes at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three rbi's and one run scored. Sophomore
Grace Sanzalone (Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingstone) and freshmen
Haley Welker (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and Caitlin
Brown had two each with Brown driving in one run and Sanzalone scoring two while Welker scored one.
In the second game, the Lady Colonels got on the board with one run in the top of the first before the Giants scored six in the bottom of the first. Keystone scored three in the bottom of the second and three in the bottom of the third while Wilkes plated four in the top of the fifth before the game ended after five innings.
Sanzalone went 3-for-3 at the plate with three rbi's and one run scored in the second game.
Lady Colonels' starting pitcher
Alexis Ayache (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) surrendered six runs (two earned) on four hits without recording and out.
Wilkes returns to action tomorrow when it will travel to Delaware Valley University for a 3 p.m. MAC Freedom doubleheader.
