Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Kenyon
FT. PIERCE, Fl. – The Wilkes University baseball team split its doubleheader with Kenyon College on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 7-3 and dropping the finale 11-3.
The Colonels are 2-2 on the season following the split.
Wilkes was unable to generate much offense in the first five innings of the first game, managing just two baserunners. Four straight batters reached base to begin the sixth, with all four coming around to score before the inning ended. Infielder
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) continued to enjoy the warm weather, belting a three-run homer in the seventh to add a little more breathing room for Wilkes.
Starting pitcher
Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) went five innings, giving up one run (earned) on four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.
Noah Durnin (Bath, PA/Northampton),
Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood), and
Patrick Condo (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) stifled Kenyon's offense for the rest of the game following all the offense. The Colonels were led at the plate by Champi, who went 1-for-4 with the three-run blast.
Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) and
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) went 2-for-4, and
Sam Eyler (York, PA/West York) went 2-for-3.
In the night cap, outfielder
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored as Wilkes fell 11-3. Starting pitcher Johnny Jan Jr went three innings giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Herbst went 2-for-4 with one run scored and Champi finished 2-for-3.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow when they face Penn State-Behrend for a single nine-inning game starting at 1 p.m.
