Wilkes Baseball Drops Pair at King's
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University baseball team dropped its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom doubleheader against King's College on Sunday afternoon, losing game one 3-2 on a walk-off single before falling 8-1 in game two.
The Colonels are now 14-12 overall and 5-7 in MAC Freedom play.
Sophomore
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) got Wilkes off to a fast start when he led off game one with a triple to right center before being driven in by senior
Ryan Herbst (East Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead.
King's got on the board in the bottom of the third on a single, a two-base error on a pickoff, and a wild pitch to tie the game at one.
The Colonels took the lead in the top of the fourth when freshman
Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) hit a two-out single to center field to drive in sophomore
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston).
Wilkes held the lead until the bottom of the seventh, when the Monarchs used two singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. The Colonels got the first out on a pop-up, but infielder Chris Rebar hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game before outfielder Bruce Breithaupt singled to give King's the game one victory.
Senior
Patrick Condo (Dallas, PA/Holy Redeemer) worked the final .2 innings surrendering two runs on three hits and one walk to suffer his first loss of the season. Junior
Johnny Jan Jr. (Germantown, MD/Northwest) pitched the first 4.1 innings for Wilkes, giving up one unearned run on five hits and four strikeouts while senior
Marcus Leaf (Reading, PA/Berks Catholic) threw 1.2 scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out three.
Champi led the Colonels at the plate in game one going 2-for-2 with one walk and one run scored.
The second game was all King's, as the Monarch's jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Wilkes got on the board in the top of the sixth en route to an 8-1 loss.
Junior
Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) threw four innings giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts to suffer his first loss of the season.
Six different Colonels registered a hit in the second game.
Wilkes returns to action on Tuesday when they will host Scranton for a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Artillery Park.
