Brownsey Sets Goals Record, Ties Points Mark as Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Defeats Centenary 21-9
EDWARDSVILLE – Senior
Madeleine Brownsey (Glenside, PA/St. Basil Academy) set the new single-game goals record with 11 and tied the single-game points mark with 12 as the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team defeated Centenary College 21-9 at Schmidt Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels improved to 9-2 overall with the victory.
Brownsey broke her own previous record that she tied last year against King's (4/8/15) and shared with Melissa Polchinski, who set the record against Misericordia (4/1/09). She tied the points mark that is shared between Ashley Leggio (4/3/08), Polchinski (4/1/09), Brittney Hodnik (4/4/09) and
Carley Smith (York, PA/Dallastown) (4/25/15 and 3/22/15). Brownsey also owns the career goals record with 247.
Wilkes jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first five minutes before Centenary scored two goals to cut the lead to 6-2. The Lady Colonels scored four more goals to push its lead to 10-2 in the 15
th minute.
After the Cyclones made it 10-3, Wilkes scored eight straight goals to put the game out of reach en route to the 21-9 victory.
Joining Brownsey in the scoring column were senior
Tori Kerr (Beacon, NY/Beacon), who had three goals and four assists for seven points, and sophomore
Jessyca Held (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon), who recorded three goals and three assists for six points. Senior
Melanie Rivera (Middletown, NY/Middletown) (two goals, one assist) and freshman
Kyra Boccio (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) (one goal, two assists) finished with three points each while senior
Catherine Conte (Ossining, NY/Ossining) added one goal.
Kerr led the Lady Colonels with 11 draw controls, while Kerr and Held each finished with three ground balls.
Freshman
Tabitha Gravius (Howell, NJ/Manalapan) earned the win, making seven saves in 48:57.
Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it will host Eastern University in a 4 p.m. MAC Freedom matchup at Schmidt Stadium.
