Wilkes Field Hockey Opens MAC Freedom Play with 1-0 Win at DeSales
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Wilkes University field hockey team began its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) season with a 1-0 win at DeSales University on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels improved to 1-0 in MAC Freedom play and 6-3 overall with the victory.
Junior
Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored the games' lone goal in the 39
th minute with an assist from sophomore Meghan Kane. DeSales attempted to clear the ball out of the circle, but senior
Maura Anistranski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) was able to push the ball back inside to Kane. Before the Bulldogs goalkeeper could clear the ball, Surdy was able to put it into the net for the score.
Sophomore
Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made six saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
Wilkes held a 21-9 shot advantage with 11 finding their target compared to just six for DeSales. The Lady Colonels also held a 14-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it will host Scranton for a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup at Schmidt Stadium.
