Wilkes Names Latest Class to be Inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame
 
WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University will induct four individuals and one team into its Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony Saturday, February 4, 2017 following a MAC Freedom basketball doubleheader at the Marts Center.
 
The 24th class of inductees includes Steve Schannauer '90 (Wrestling), Meghan Haddad Conway '98 (Women's Soccer), Jay Reimel '71 (Men's Basketball), Margo Serafini '92 (Women's Basketball, Softball, Field Hockey) and the 1970-71 Wrestling Team.
 
Inductees will be introduced at halftime of the men's basketball game against Manhattanville. A reception will follow immediately after the game in the Marts Center Hall of Fame Room.
 
12708Steve Schannauer '90 (Wrestling)
Schannauer was a four-year letter winner on the Wilkes wrestling team serving as a co-captain during the 1989 season and a quad-captain in his senior season in 1990. Wrestling at heavyweight, Schannauer finished fourth at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) in 1988, fifth at the event in 1989 and a second place finish in 1990.  He was also selected to the Super Sixteen team chosen by legendary Wilkes wrestling coach John Reese.
 







12706Meghan Haddad Conway '98 (Women's Soccer)
A four-year letter winner on the Wilkes women's soccer team, Haddad Conway is one of the most decorated players in the program's history. She was named first team All-Freedom Conference in 1996 for her play at forward. A gifted player on the attack, Haddad Conway stands fourth all-time in career goals (32) and sixth all-time in career points (73). She also set several single season records including goals in a season (15 in 1994) while standing fourth in points (33 in 1994).
 







12707Jay Reimel '71 (Men's Basketball)
Part of the foundation of the Wilkes men's basketball program, Reimel was the catalyst that made the engine go in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Staring in the backcourt with fellow Wilkes Hall of Famers Bo Ryan and Herb Kemp, Reimel led the Wilkes offense playing point guard for the up-tempo Colonel attack. Reimel remains the program's all-time assist leader finishing with 628 assists, over a hundred more than the second Colonel on the list. He recorded a single season record 216 assists during the 1969-70 season while leading Wilkes to four straight winning seasons.
 







12709Margo Serafini '92 (Women's Basketball, Softball, Field Hockey)
A three-sport star for Wilkes, Serafini played basketball, softball and field hockey during her four years as a Lady Colonel. Serving as a goalie for the field hockey team, her eight career shutouts stand third all-time in the program's history. She also holds the single season record for saves in a game finishing with 38 stops against Bloomsburg in 1985. Serafini also played softball for two years and basketball for one year at Wilkes. She was named the Wilkes Female Athlete of the Year in 1986 and 1987.
 





 
1970-71 Wrestling Team
One of five undefeated teams in Wilkes wrestling storied history, the 1970-71 squad finished a perfect 13-0 in dual match play including three shutouts and an average margin of victory of 23 points. The squad won the Middle Atlantic Conference team championship with a tournament record of 116 points and saw six wrestlers win individual titles. The team featured nine wrestlers with one MAC championship, two two-time MAC champions and four three-time MAC champions while also boasting six All-Americans including two two-time winners. Wilkes finished second overall at the Wilkes Open and fifth at the NCAA College Division National Championship. Team members include: Jay McGinley, Bob Roberts, Art Trovi, Dennis Verzera, Bob Matley, Jerry Alexander, Alan Zellner, Gerry Willetts, Rich Ceccoli, Ron Fritts, Alain Arnould, Mac Ahmad, Bob Darling, Dennis Gillespie, Bob Yanku, Al Brackleman, Jim DeSombre, Bill Kenney, John Martellucci, Tom Chabalko, Al Favata, Mike Lee, Tom Morris, Len Cholish, Ed Garabedian, Dick Mandigo and Jeff Walk.
