Wilkes Field Hockey Dominates Manhattanville 2-0 to Climb Back Even in MAC Freedom

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University field hockey team dominated from the first whistle in its 2-0 win over Manhattanville College in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action at Schmidt Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Colonels outshot the Valiants 37-6 on the day, with 28 Wilkes shots hitting the target compared to just two for Manhattanville. This was the most shots in a game since September 21st of last season, when 38 shots were put up against Immaculata.

The Lady Colonels improved to 2-2 in MAC Freedom play, 6-8 overall for the season.

Wilkes got the scoring started in the 32nd minute on a penalty corner when Megan Kane (Kingston, PA/Wyoming Valley West) found Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) for a laser shot that finally breached the cage for the 1-0 lead. The Lady Colonels outshot the Valiants 15-3 in the first half.

Wilkes kept its foot on the peddle in the second half, breaking through for its second goal in the 67th minute when Gayoski scored her second goal of the contest with an assist from Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood).

The Lady Colonels defense played a stout game as well, highlighted by a key defensive save in the ninth minute from Kane. Dallas Kendra (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) made one save to earn her sixth victory of the season. Kendra also earned her ninth career shutout, moving her out of a tie and into sole possession of third place on the career list.

Wilkes also held a 16-4 advantage in penalty corners, the most penalty corners the Lady Colonels have earned this season.

Prior to the match, Wilkes held its annual alumni game where several decades of Lady Colonel field hockey were represented. Wilkes returns to action on Wednesday when it will travel to King's for a 7:00 p.m. MAC Freedom contest.
