Wilkes Women's Volleyball Completes Day Two of Colonel Clash
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team completed the final day of the second annual Colonel Clash Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Marts Center, falling to Kean University 3-0 in the morning before a spirited 3-2 loss to Moravian in the final match of the weekend.
The Lady Colonels now stand at 8-20.
In set one against Kean, Wilkes held close at 10-8 before the Cougars went on a 14-5 run to get to 24 points before closing it out at 25-19. In set two, the Lady Colonels held a 17-13 lead and a 20-15 lead before Kean finished the set on a 10-1 run to win it 25-21. The Cougars raced out to a 6-3 in lead in the third set until Wilkes came back to tie the score at seven. The score remained close until Kean used a 5-0 run to take a 15-10 lead en route to 25-18 win.
Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) led the attack in game one with a match-high 10 kills.
Kayley Schinski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) finished with seven and
Madison Scarfaro (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) added six.
Alexis Morgan (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) provided 24 assists while
Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North) led the back line with a match-high 14 digs with
Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) adding 10 and Morgan contributing five.
In the first set against Moravian, the Lady Colonels took a 4-1 lead early before the Greyhounds battled to tie the score five. Moravian then raced out to an 11-7 lead and never relinquished it, taking the set 25-16. In set two, the score remained close until with an 11-10 lead, Wilkes used a 7-0 to take an 18-10 lead, taking the set 25-16. Moravian held a 19-11 lead late in the third set before the Lady Colonels stormed back to take the set 25-23. The Greyhounds jumped out to a 6-0 in set four, taking it 25-16 to send the match to a fifth game. Moravian took a 6-2 lead in the final game eventually winning 15-7.
Mikovich led the way for Wilkes in the final match with a match-high 21 kills, while Scarfaro and Ferrier had eight a piece. Morgan added a match-high 40 assists while Mikovich (18), Morgan (16), and Betke (14) led the back line.
The Lady Colonels return to action on Wednesday when they host Misericordia in a 7:00 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom match which will also be senior night.
