Defense Holds Strong as Wilkes Men's Soccer Posts 2-0 Victory Over Lancaster Bible
EDWARDSVILLE –
Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) continued his strong play scoring his fifth game-winning goal of the season and
Cole Hefner (East Greenville, PA/Southern Lehigh) added an insurance tally late as the Wilkes University men's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout over Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.
Wilkes moved to 6-5 overall on the season following its fourth home win of the year. LBC dropped to 4-5-2 after the road defeat.
Wilkes peppered the LBC goalie early with two great opportunities on goal. Fernandez-Maldonado's free kick from top of the box was saved by the Chargers keeper before
Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro)'s shot was also stopped two minutes later off the left side inside the twenty.
The Colonels made good later on the attack when Huff headed home a loose ball after the Charger keeper misplayed a cross sent in from the left side. It marked the fourth goal for Huff in the last four games as Wilkes led 1-0 with 27:21 left in the first half.
Huff looked for his second tally of the game at the 32:05 mark when he took stride on a breakaway attempt down the left side of the field only to see his shot from ten yards out be saved by a diving Charger keeper.
Scoring chances were limited throughout the second half as the Colonels best chance came off the head of
Shane Henehan (Bensalem, PA/Mast Community Charter School) when his attempt off a Huff corner kick went wide left of the goal at the 71:02 mark.
Wilkes kept its one goal lead until the 77:54 mark when Hefner kicked home his second strike of the season off a corner from
Jeffrey Eager-Heffner (Blandon, PA/Fleetwood Area).
The Wilkes defensive unit was strong all game holding LBC's top two scorers to just two shots combined.
Tim Gallagher (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) saw limited action in net for Wilkes making one save to preserve his fourth shutout of the year.
Wilkes returns to the pitch Saturday with a MAC Freedom contest against FDU-Florham at 7:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
