Wilkes Women's Volleyball Takes First Set before Falling 3-1 to Lancaster Bible
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team captured the opening set of its non-conference match against Lancaster Bible College before dropping the next three sets to suffer the 3-1 defeat inside the Marts Center Thursday night. Set scores on Colonels for Pediatric Cancer Night were 26-24, 19-25, 21-25, and 20-25.
Wilkes fell to 4-15 on the season and Lancaster Bible moved to 8-10.
Senior
Madison Scarfaro (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led the Lady Colonels with 13 kills. It was the third time this season she had double digit kills.
Wilkes trailed 16-11 in the opening set before going on a five point run to tie the score. Freshman
Erin Silverman (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) was serving during the run of points that were scored on two Scarfaro kills, a kill by sophomore
Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), and two Chargers hitting errors.
Wilkes would continue to trail or be tied until they took the 24-23 lead on one of sophomore
Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain)'s five aces. A kill by senior
Alexis Morgan (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) and then a ball handling error on Lancaster Bible gave the Lady Colonels the 26-24 win in set one.
The Chargers would take sets two and three by scores of 25-19 and 25-21.
The fourth set saw Lancaster Bible ahead 21-13 before Wilkes scored five straight points as they tried to extend the match to a fifth set. In the run, Ferrier had two aces and a kill and Scarfaro and senior
Kayley Schinski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) each also had one kill. The Chargers then closed out the set at 25-20 for the 3-1 match victory.
Schinski had eight kills, four blocks, and a career-high 11 digs. Silverman recorded a career-best eight digs and Natale tied a career-high with six kills. Morgan had 39 assists and 15 digs for her fifth double-double in the last six matches.
Sophomore
Julie Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) had her first career kill and also had five digs. Sophomore
Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North) led the Lady Colonels with 18 digs. Ferrier added 12 kills and seven digs and freshman
Christie Challenger (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) recorded her first career digs and blocks with five and two respectively.
The Lady Colonels will continue non-conference action on Saturday, October 7 when they host a tri-match against Lebanon Valley College and Rutgers-Newark. Game times are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
