Wilkes Women's Volleyball Sweeps Homecoming Tri-Match with LVC and Rutgers-Newark

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team swept its tri-match on homecoming weekend, defeating Lebanon Valley College 3-1 before besting Rutgers-Newark 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Colonels improved to 6-15 with the victories.

In set one of the match with the Flying Dutchmen, Wilkes jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind kills from Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) and Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North). Lebanon Valley battled back to cut the lead to 10-5 before the Lady Colonels exploded for nine straight points, eventually taking the set 25-6. The Flying Dutchmen grabbed a 3-0 lead early in set two before Wilkes came back to take a 5-4 lead. Both teams traded points until the end of the set. The Lady Colonels trailed 25-24 but rattled off three consecutive points to win the set 27-25. Wilkes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set three but Lebanon Valley outscored the Lady Colonels 25-14 the rest of the way to take its only set 25-18. The Flying Dutchmen led 9-6 in the fourth set before Wilkes went on an 11-2 run to take a commanding 17-11 lead they did not relinquish, taking the final set 25-20.

The Lady Colonels were led in the first match by Ferrier's 12 kills. Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) finished with 11 while Madison Scarfaro (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) added nine. Alexis Morgan (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) finished with 31 assists, while Betke led the way with 19 digs, followed by Mikovich with 12 and Scarfaro with nine. Mikovich, Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), and Kayley Schinski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) each totaled five blocks.

In the first set against Rutgers-Newark, Wilkes jumped to a 4-0 lead behind kills from Ferrier and Schinski before the Scarlett Raiders clawed back to 4-3. The set remained even until the middle, with both teams standing at 15 points before the Lady Colonels notched seven consecutive points to lead 22-15 en route to a 25-20 win. Rutgers-Newark led 3-0 early in set two before Wilkes found its rhythm, securing multiple five-point leads before the Scarlett Raiders battled back to tie the score at 20-20. From there, the Lady Colonels outscored Rutgers-Newark 5-2 to take the set 25-22. With the score 11-9 in the third set, Wilkes rattled off an 11-5 run as they won the final game 25-21 to sweep the match.

Mikovich led the offense in the second match with 13 kills. Ferrier finished with eight while Scarfaro contributed seven with Morgan adding another 31 assists. Betke (14), Julie Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) (eight), and Schinski (six) led the back line while Ferrier added three blocks.

The Lady Colonels return to action on Monday when they host Marywood for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match.
