Wilkes Women's Basketball Defeated by No. 19/13 Scranton in Cross County Challenge Action
WILKES-BARRE –
Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) was named the team MVP for the Wilkes University women's basketball team over the course of the second annual Cross County Challenge but it was the No. 19/13 University of Scranton Lady Royals that left the Marts Center with a 78-43 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels dropped to 1-2 on the season while Scranton improved to 2-0.
McFadden led Wilkes to a victory Friday night in the Lady Colonels first game of the Cross County Challenge with a career-high 18 points and 10 rebounds against Marywood University. She had a team-high seven rebounds against Scranton and added five points and two assists.
Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) led the Lady Colonels with 11 points.
Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) added nine points and
Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic) scored eight points and had four steals.
Kelsey Yustat (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) scored three points to record her first points for the Wilkes program.
The Lady Colonels started the game by building a 7-3 lead after a McFadden three-pointer with 3:51 left in the first quarter. The Lady Royals then closed the quarter with the final eight points to lead 11-7 after one frame and in all went on a 20-2 run to lead 23-9 with 6:31 left in the second quarter. From that point the Lady Colonels had a tough time rallying and Scranton built its lead to a game-high 35 points at the end.
Bridgett Mann was named the team MVP for Scranton. She scored 13 points and added five rebounds and five assists against Wilkes. Friday night she scored 10 points and had six rebounds in Scranton's first game of the tournament.
The Lady Colonels held the 10-6 advantage in fast break points.
Erika Bistran was named the team MVP for Marywood with 35 combined points in the Pacers two games. Mackenzie Yori scored 30 points in King's 77-74 win over Marywood
Saturday and added 18 against Scranton Friday to be named the team MVP for the Lady Monarchs.
Wilkes will remain at the Marts Center to face Penn State Wilkes-Barre in its next game on Tuesday, November 21 at 5:00 p.m. before having eight days off for the Thanksgiving holiday.
