WILKES-BARRE –
Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and
Catey McFadden (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) combined for 36 points and 33 rebounds to lead host Wilkes University to a 72-51 non-conference victory over Penn State Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday night.
Wilkes moved to 2-2 overall following its second home win of the season while PSU Wilkes-Barre suffered its first defeat standing 3-1 on the year.
Roberts led all scorers with 20 points and 14 rebounds, making for career-highs in both categories while McFadden added 16 points and a career-best 19 rebounds, tied for sixth all-time in a single game in program history. The last time a Wilkes player recorded 19 or more rebounds was 2003 when Whitney Bull pulled down 21 against Moravian.
Wilkes closed the first quarter with buckets from Roberts and
Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) to take a 19-12 lead after one. The advantage grew to 12 points after
Kelsey Yustat (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) sank a three-pointer two minutes into the second stanza before the Lady Lions clawed all the way back tying the game at 24-24 with 5:01 left in the first half. Five straight points from
Emily Sofranko (Jim Thorpe, PA/Marian Catholic) followed by two free throws from Roberts and a transition score from Alfano pushed the lead back to 36-24 with just under two minutes left in the half. The teams traded buckets in the final three possessions as the Lady Colonels led 39-27 at the break.
Wilkes maintained a double figure lead throughout the third quarter and into the fourth before a 7-0 run midway through the final frame capped off by a
Nicole Farrell (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) offensive rebound and score put the game out of reach at 67-48.
Roberts finished 7-for-12 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the foul line on way to her career night. She also added two blocks and two steals. McFadden was equally as efficient going 7-for-17 from the field and added three blocks. Nine of her 19 rebounds came on the offensive end.
The Lady Colonels remain idle through the Thanksgiving holiday and return to the court November 30 at Moravian College at 7:00 p.m.
