DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - The Wilkes University baseball team pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of six Delaware Valley University errors in a 14-3 game two win after dropping the first game 6-3 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action on Friday afternoon.
The Colonels are now 8-17 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
In game one, the Aggies got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first on two hits.
Wilkes responded in the top of the second with one run on one hit.
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) started with a two-out walk and came around to score on
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono)'s double to tie the game.
Delaware Valley retook the lead in the bottom of the second with three runs on one hit and two errors to take a 4-1 lead.
The Colonels started chipping away in the top of the third, scoring one run on three hits.
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) led off the inning with a double to left and came around to score on
Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston)'s RBI single. Wilkes cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fourth when Brown singled, moved to second on a groundout, and came in to score on a single from Wing.
The Aggies opened up a two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth with one run on no hits and finished the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with one run on two hits.
Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) fell to 1-2 on the season, throwing the first five-plus innings and surrendering six runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Brown (3-for3, one run scored, one RBI), and Wing (2-for-4, one run, one RBI) each had mutli-hit performances in game one.
In game two, Wilkes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on three hits. Wing singled to left to start the game and advanced to second on a wild pitch before coming in to score on
Tyler Walther (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley)'s double to right. After a flyout,
Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton) singled to left to bring home Walther.
The Colonels added a third run in the top of the second when Brown led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and came in to score on an RBI single from Wing.
Delaware Valley cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second on two hits, and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third on two hits and one error.
Wilkes retook the lead for good in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits and taking advantage of four Aggie miscues. Fischer reached on a single and advanced to second on an error by the center fielder before coming in to score on a single from Brown.
Alex Kramer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) reached on a fielder's choice that forced Brown at second.
Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) followed with a walk to advance Kramer with boh advancing on an error from the third baseman off the bat of Wing. Gonzalez moved to third on an error by the pitcher that allowed Kramer to score before Wing advanced to second ona wild pitch.
The Colonels added a sixth run in the top of the fifth on one hit an one error. Walther led of with a hit-by-pitch and moved to third on an error by the pitcher before Reinert was hit by a pitch. Fischer reached on a failed squeeze that put Walther out at home followed by a run-scoring single from Brown.
Wilkes busted the game open in the top of the sixth with eight runs on six hits. Gonzalez and Wing began the inning with walks before Champi singled to right to bring home Gonzalez and move Wing to third. Following Champi's steal of second to put runners at second and third, Slocum ripped a double to center to bring home both runners. Reinert came up next and singled to put runners at the corners before Reinert took second base. Brown continued his heroics, singling to left center to drive both runners home. After Kramer walked, Gonzalez kept the hit parade going with a two run double to score Brown and Kramer with Gonzalez coming around to score on a Wing single to finish the scoring.
Johnny Jan Jr. (Germantown, MD/Northwest) earned his second win, pitching four innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout and
Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro) finished the game with a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
Brown had another perfect game at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI's. Wing (3-4, two runs, two RBI's) and Reinert (2-3,two runs, one RBI) each had multiple hits in game two.
The Colonels return to the field on Monday when they travel to Lackawanna College for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game.
