Eight-Run Eighth Propels Wilkes Baseball Over Marywood 10-9 in Epic Colonels Comeback

Eight-Run Eighth Propels Wilkes Baseball Over Marywood 10-9 in Epic Colonels Comeback

KINGSTON – Trailing 9-2 entering the eighth inning, the Wilkes University baseball team rallied for eight runs in the bottom half of the frame on way to an epic 10-9 comeback win over visiting Marywood University Wednesday afternoon at Artillery Park.

Wilkes improved to 9-17 overall following the non-conference home win. Marywood dropped to 7-16 overall on the season after suffering the defeat.

Wilkes trailed 4-1 following a Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) single that scored Alex Kramer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) in the fourth. A Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) RBI single in the seventh plated the Colonels second run of the game as Wilkes continued to trail 8-2 after seven innings.

Marywood added a run in the top of the eighth to take a commanding 9-2 lead into the bottom of the frame. Then the Colonels began their epic comeback at the plate. Jarrett Clymer led-off the inning with a walk and Joe Dancsecs singled before Wing was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases. Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) drilled a three-run double to right field clearing the bases as Wilkes still trailed 9-5. Champi would later score on a wild pitch making it 9-6 with just one out.

After a Matt Dacey (Mountaintop, PA/Holy Redeemer) walk, James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) doubled to right center scoring Slocum on the play cutting the lead to 9-7. Clymer reached on a throwing error at second base where both Dacey and Brown came around to score on to tie the game at 9. One batter later Tyler Walther (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) came through with the clutch pinch-hit as he singled home Clymer for the game-winning run and completed the Colonels comeback rally.

Matt Amaral (Taylor, PA/Riverside) came on to close out the ninth getting two groundouts and a fly out to end the game.

Wilkes pounded out 12 hits including two each from Wing, Slocum and Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser). Ramon Bazan (Reading, PA/Reading) recorded the win on the mound getting the final two outs in the eighth.

Wilkes returns to MAC Freedom play Saturday when the Colonels play cross-town rival King's College at 1:30 p.m. at PNC Field in Moosic.
