King's Gets Past Wilkes Baseball 5-4

MOOSIC, Pa. – King's College hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to get past the Wilkes University baseball team 5-4 at PNC Field in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom game on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels are now 9-18 overall and 3-10 in MAC Freedom play.

King's jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first four innings.

Wilkes tied the game in the top of the fifth with three runs on two hits and one error. Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) started the rally with a one-out walk and moved to third when Joe Champi (Dupont, PA/Pittston) singled down the left field line. Tyler Walther (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) brought Wing home when he reached on an error that moved Champi to second with both runners coming in to score when Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) singled to right center to tie the score.

The Colonels took the lead in the top of the seventh with one run on two hits. Champi reached on a one-out double and came in to score on Walther's RBI single up the middle.

The Monarchs tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with one run on no hits.

King's ended the game in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off single to right.

Chris Nixon (Swoyersville, PA/Wyoming Valley West) started on the mound for Wilkes, pitching six innings while surrendering three runs on seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Matt Kaster (Traben-Trabach, Germany/Crestwood) fell to 1-3, pitching the final 2.2 innings and giving up two runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Slocum led the Colonels at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI's. Champi (2-5, two runs) and Walther (1-2, one run, two RBI's) rounded out the offensive leaders.

Wilkes returns to action tomorrow when it will host King's for a 1:00 p.m. MAC Freedom doubleheader at Artillery Park.
