No Shortage of Offense as Wilkes Baseball Splits with King's
KINGSTON – There was no shortage of offense this afternoon as the Wilkes University baseball team split its doubleheader with Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom-foe King's College on Sunday afternoon, mashing its way to a 15-3 win in game one before falling in game two 12-7.
The Colonels are now 10-19 overall and 4-11 in MAC Freedom play.
In game one, King's jumped out in front 1-0 in the top of the second with one run on two hits.
Wilkes blew the game open with a 12-run bottom of the second, setting a new program record with 10 hits in the frame besting the old mark set when the Colonels notched nine hits in the fourth inning against Ursinus in 1974.
Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) started the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a single from
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono), with both runners moving up when
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) singled to load the bases with no outs.
Alex Kramer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) came through with a three-run double to the gap in left center and came around to score when
Keaton Allison (Aiken, SC/Aiken) doubled off the wall in center field to make it 4-1 Wilkes. After
Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) sacrificed Kramer to third,
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) laced a double of his own to left center and then stole third. After a groundout,
Tyler Walther (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Slocum both walked to reload the bases with
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) quickly emptying them with a bases-clearing double to left center to expand the lead to 8-1. Fischer ad Kramer followed with back-to-back walks to reload the bases before Allison singled to drive in Brown and Fischer before Gonzalez singled to left bringing home Kramer. Wing finished the scoring with a single to left that brought Allison home. Eight Colonels had hits in the record-breaking inning.
The Monarchs cut the deficit to 12-3 in the top of the fourth with two runs on no hits.
Wilkes finished the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on four hits and one King's error. Wing led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a flyout, Wing feigned a tag-up to second, forcing a throw from the right fielder that got away and allowed him to come in to score. Walther followed with a walk before Slocum blasted a two-run homer to finish the scoring.
Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) improved to 2-2, throwing five innings while allowing three runs on two hits with seven walks and five strikeouts.
Matt Amaral (Taylor, PA/Riverside) pitched a perfect final two frames with one strikeout.
Wing (3-4, two runs, two RBI's), Slocum (3-3, three runs, two RBI's), and Allison (3-4, two runs, three RBI's) each had three hits. Brown, Fischer, Kramer,and Gonzalez all had two hits each in game one.
In game two, the Colonels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on two hits. Walther hit an infield single and advance to third on Slocum's single. After Slocum advanced on a wild pitch, Brown walked to load the bases, followed by an RBI walk from Fischer.
King's jumped in front in the top of second with six runs on five hits.
Wilkes cut the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth with one run on three hits. Fischer led off with a single to left and moved to second on Allison's one-out single to left. Gonzalez loaded the bases with a single before Wing hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Fischer.
The Colonels slashed the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs on three hits and one error. Walther led off reaching on an error and moved to second on Slocum's single up the middle with both runners moving up on a wild pitch, followed by Brown and Fischer hitting consecutive sacrifice flies to center field.
The Monarch's doubled their lead in the top of the sixth with two runs on two hits to take an 8-4 lead.
Wilkes battled back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on five hits to get within one run. Champi started the rally with a one-out homer to left. Slocum continued his hot-hitting day with a two-out double to center, coming into score on Brown's double. Fischer followed with a single up the middle to bring around Brown and bring the Colonels to within 8-7 heading into the final inning.
King's responded by scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Johnny Jan Jr. (Germantown, MD/Northwest) fell to 2-5 this season, allowing six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
Slocum led the Colonels at the plate in game two, going 3-for-4 with two runs. Fischer (2-2, one run, three RBI's),
Dan Eicher (Massapequa Park, NY/Kellenberg) (2-2) and Allison (2-4) each finished with two hits.
Wilkes returns to the field on Wednesday when it travels to Keystone for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game.
