Wilkes Baseball Falls in Two One-Run Games at Manhattanville
PURCHASE, N.Y, - The Wilkes University baseball team dropped two heart breakers in its Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader on Saturday afternoon 7-6 in game one and 10-9 in nine innings in game two at Manhattanville College.
The Colonels are now 10-23 overall and 4-14 in conference.
In game one, Wilkes got on the board first with a run in the top of the second on two hits.
James Brown (Covington, PA/North Pocono) led off with a walk and advanced to second when the Valiants pitcher threw away a pickoff attempt.
Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) followed with a single to right that moved Brown to third before
Jarret Clymer (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Brown.
Manhattanville took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on one hit.
The Colonels retook the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth on three hits.
Joshua Slocum (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) led off the inning with a double down the left field line and was followed by Brown, who walked. Capozzi stepped up next and hit a fly out to left with Slocum tagging up and advancing to third before Clymer doubled to left to bring home Slocum and move Brown to third. Clymer and Brown both came in to score on
Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser)'s two-out single.
The Valiants retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with four runs on two hits and one error to take a 6-4 lead.
Wilkes answered in their next half-inning, scoring two runs on three hits to tie the score at six. Capozzi led off the frame with a single to center and advanced two bases on a wild pitch before Clymer brought him home with a single to center. Clymer moved to second on
Alex Kramer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East)'s sacrifice bunt and moved to third on a Gonzalez's groundout to second before
Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) walked and stole second.
Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) brought Clymer home with an infield single.
Manhattanville scored one run in the bottom of the sixth on two hits to take reach the 7-6 final.
Quinn Kelly (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) pitched the first 4.2 innings for the Colonels, allowing six runs (three earned) on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Nick Poyer fell to 0-1 allowing one run on one walk in 0.1 innings.
Capozzi finished game one 3-for-4 with one run scored. Clymer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's in the first game.
In game two, Wilkes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on two hits. Wing led off with a single to right field and moved to second when Fischer walked. Brown continued his heroics, lacing a two-out two-run double to center to drive in both runners.
The Valiants tied the game in the bottom of the first with two runs on three hits, and jumped out to a 5-2 lead with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the second.
Manhattanville added a sixth run in the bottom of the fourth on three hits to take a 6-2 lead.
The Colonels cut the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the fifth with three runs on five hits.
Tanner Smith (Upper Black Eddy, PA/Palisades) led off the inning with a single to right and moved to second on a groundout.
Keaton Allison (Aiken, SC/Aiken) brought him home with a two-out double to right, with Allison coming home when Slocum singled to right. Slocum moved to second on Brown's single to right before Capozzi singled to left to bring home Slocum.
The Valiants pushed their lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the fifth with one run on two hits.
Wilkes wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring two runs in their final at-bat on two hits to tie the score at seven in the top of the seventh. Fischer led off with a hit-by-pitch before a double play took him off the bases. With two outs, Slocum was hit by a pitch and advanced to third when Brown doubled to left center. Capozzi continued his heroics for the day, singling up the middle to bring home both runners.
The Colonels took the lead in the top of the eighth, scoring two runs on three hits. Kramer led off with a single to center and was pinch-run for by
Matthew Reese (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro). Gonzalez followed with a walk before both runners executed a double steal to put runners on second and third with no outs. Wing came up next and singled to center to move Gonzalez to third and bring in Reese before Fischer laid down a bunt single that moved Wing to second with Wing coming in to score on a double play ground ball to give Wilkes a 9-7 lead.
Manhattanville tied the score in the bottom of the inning with two runs on three hits, and won the game in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out walk-off solo home run.
Jeremy Yziek suffered the loss in game two, giving up one run on one hit.
Brown led the way at the plate in game two, finishing 4-for-5 with one run and two RBI's. Wing (2-5, two runs, one RBI) and Capozzi (2-4, three RBI's) each had multiple hits in the second game.
Wilkes returns to the field on Wednesday when it will host Scranton on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
