Wilkes Field Hockey Turns on Burners in Second Half to Down Keystone 4-0
EDWARDSVILLE – In a game that was tied at zero going into halftime, the Wilkes University field hockey team scored four unanswered goals in the second half to defeat Keystone College 4-0 at Schmidt Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Colonels improved to 2-3 on the season.
The contest was mostly passing in the first half with each team registering two shots and Wilkes notching three penalty corners compared to just one for the Giants.
Freshman
Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) got the scoring started when she took a pass from junior
Kayla Gronkowski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) and one timed a shot into the right side of the goal.
Junior
Haley Gayoski (Forty Fort, PA/Wyoming Valley West) netted her first goal of the season in the 50
th minute when junior
Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) lined a shot of off a penalty corner that pinballed off of a defender right to Gayoski with an open net.
Freshman
Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) increased the lead to 3-0 in the 52
nd minute when Gayoski passed it off of a penalty corner allowing Stepanski to strike a laser right through the goalkeeper's legs.
Dunn finished the scoring in the 70
th minute when she scored unassisted, taking a rebound from a Surdy shot and depositing it in the net.
The Lady Colonels ended the game with a 14-7 advantage in shots, 9-4 hitting the target, and held a 12-4 penalty corner advantage.
Wilkes returns to the field when it will face Alvernia for a 12:00 p.m. non-conference game Saturday at Schmidt Stadium.
