Wilkes Women's Soccer Dominates Penn College 3-0

EDWARDSVILLE – Lauren Esser (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) and Ema Sabovic (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) provided the offense and the Wilkes University women's soccer team turned in another great team defensive performance to shutout visiting Penn College 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

With the win Wilkes remained unbeaten at 4-0-1 overall and Penn College fell to 1-2-1.

The Lady Colonels stuck for the game's first goal in the 30th minute after Esser played a dangerous ball into the box off of a corner kick. The ball deflected off a couple of Wildcat defenders and then found Sabovic's foot for the tap in goal. The tally was the second goal of the season for the senior.

Wilkes would stretch the lead to two at the 58:12 mark when Sabovic switched the field with a cross from the right wing. The ball went off a defenders head and Esser trapped it down. She struck the ball from the upper left part of the box and found the top right corner of the goal. For the junior, it was her first career goal.

Sabovic again was involved in the Lady Colonels third goal when she crossed the ball and it hit Breica Beck and went in for an own goal at the 60:04 mark. That provided the final 3-0 margin for Wilkes.

The shutout was the second in a row by the Lady Colonels. The only shot attempt that Wilkes allowed came in the 76th minute off a free kick by Christina Weber from outside the top of the box. The attempt went over the crossbar with Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) defending in the Wilkes goal.

Sophomore Kendall Koch (Asbury, NJ/Warren Hills) entered in the 78th minute to see her first action of the season in goal for the Lady Colonels and together with Courtney provided the clean sheet.

Wilkes outshot Penn College 23-1 and held a 14-0 lead in shots-on-goal. Wilkes also held the 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lady Colonels next play at Susquehanna University for their second road game of the season. The game against the No. 9 team in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Poll is set for a 7:00 p.m. start time in Selinsgrove, Pa on Wednesday, September 20.
