Wilkes Women's Volleyball Battles to Wins against PSU-Harrisburg and Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team gained confidence with a set win against nationally ranked Eastern on Wednesday and continued that into its weekend play where they picked up non-conference victories against Penn State-Harrisburg and Immaculata University on Saturday in a tri-match.

Wilkes first played Penn State-Harrisburg in a five-set thriller where the Lady Colonels fought off five match points to take the decisive final set by a score of 20-18. The teams traded the first four sets with scores of 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, and 22-25.

The Lady Colonels then dispatched Immaculata in straight sets 26-24, 25-15, and 25-16.

Wilkes now has a 4-6 overall record and is 0-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.

Penn State-Harrisburg (5-4) came from behind in the fourth set to force the fifth set tiebreak and in the fifth set took a 10-4 lead on Wilkes. The Lady Colonels battled back with six straight points to tie the set at 10 on two Nittany Lion errors, two Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) kills, and two Mikovich aces.

Then Penn State-Harrisburg took a 14-12 lead and had two chances at match point but had two errors. A Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North) kill and two more errors were enough to stave off three more match points. With the score tied at 18, Mikovich provided her 17th kill of the match and then a Katelyn Hossler attack error gave Wilkes the 20-18 set win and 3-2 match victory.

Alexis Morgan (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) dished out a season-high 42 assists for the Lady Colonels while Madison Scarfaro (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) and Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) registered a career-best 14 and 10 kills respectively. Kayley Schinski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) tied a career-high with four aces and Betke led Wilkes with 17 digs.

In the second match of the day, Wilkes battled back from an 18-15 deficit in the opening set to Immaculata (2-4) to win 26-24. A Morgan kill gave Wilkes the 23-22 lead. Then after trading four points the Lady Colonels ended the set with a Mikovich kill.

Wilkes took the next two sets in a much more comfortable fashion by scores of 25-15 and 25-16.

Mikovich had her second double-double of the day with 14 kills and 14 digs after 17 and 10 earlier in the day. Morgan had 30 assists along with five kills and five digs. Schinski led the team with three blocks and Betke set a career-high with 25 digs.

Wilkes heads to Manhattanville College on Tuesday, September 19 for its first MAC Freedom road match of the season. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
