Bracchi Scores as Wilkes Women's Soccer Knocks off Arcadia 1-0

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team defeated Arcadia University 1-0 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium. The Knights were ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Mid-Atlantic Poll and receiving votes in the national poll.

Sophomore Delfina Bracchi (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip) recorded her first career goal at the 67:01 mark to nail down the victory for Wilkes. The Lady Colonels moved their record to 5-1-1 and are still unbeaten at home. Arcadia fell to 5-4-0.

The game was scoreless at the half and the Lady Colonels almost stuck for the first goal in the 57th minute when Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) let a shot go that the Arcadia goalkeeper tipped off the crossbar.

Wilkes grabbed the lead about 10 minutes later after a thrown in went to Dianna Connor (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley). She beat a defender down the left side of the field and turned a cross into the middle of the box where Bracchi found the end of it for a one-timer goal. It was the fourth career assist for Connor.

The Lady Colonels defense stood tall the rest of the game led by Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) in goal. She picked up her second shutout of the season and made four saves. It was the third team shutout of the season for Wilkes.

Arcadia led 15-9 in shot attempts with the shots on goal even at four apiece. The Knights held the 9-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

The Lady Colonels will play their third straight regionally ranked team when they host the University of Scranton at Schmidt Stadium on Tuesday, September 26 at 4:30 p.m. The Royals are the No. 6 ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
