Wilkes Women's Soccer Plays Scranton to Scoreless Draw

EDWARDSVILLE – In its first game as a regionally ranked team since 2013 the Wilkes University women's soccer team played the University of Scranton to a 0-0 tie after double overtime did not produce a winner on Tuesday evening at Schmidt Stadium.

Earlier in the day it was announced that Wilkes was ranked No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches Mid-Atlantic Poll.

The Lady Colonels took on their third straight regionally-ranked opponent as Scranton came into the game as the Mid-Atlantic's No. 5 team. With the draw Wilkes finished the three-game stretch with a 1-1-1 record and now are 5-1-2 on the season. The Royals are now 5-2-2.

The start of the second overtime produced the closest scoring chance of the game for Wilkes when senior forward Ema Sabovic (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) found room near the top of the box on the left side. She let a great shot go that was labeled for the upper right of the Royals net but Colleen Berry made a leaping save for Scranton.

The Lady Colonels defense was strong again in front of junior goalkeeper Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert). It was the fourth game out of the last five that Wilkes has not allowed a goal. Stanley made one save and earned her third shutout of the season.

Wilkes held the 12-6 shots advantage and led 5-1 in shots on goal. The Lady Colonels also held the edge in corner kicks 7-5. In addition to Sabovic, junior Nicole Harmer (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta), sophomore Delfina Bracchi (Central Islip, NY/Central Islip),freshman Mackenzie Koharski (Coal Twp., PA/Shamokin), and freshman Catherine Gregoire (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity) recorded the shots on goal for Wilkes.

The Lady Colonels open Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play in their next game when they travel to Doylestown, Pa. to take on Delaware Valley University on Friday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m.
