Comeback Attempt Falls Short as Wilkes Field Hockey Falls at Scranton 5-3
SCRANTON, Pa. – Despite scoring three goals in the second half, the Wilkes University field hockey team's comeback attempt fell short as they were defeated at the University of Scranton on Tuesday evening by a 5-3 final.
The Lady Colonels are now 3-6 on the season.
Scranton jumped out to a 4-0 lead with goals in the 11
th, 15
th, 18
th, and 41
st minute.
Wilkes started its comeback in the 47
th minute when sophomore
Sarah Smith (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Meyers) corralled a rebound and put a shot in for her first career goal.
Junior
Megan Kane (Kingston, PA/Wyoming Valley West) decreased the deficit to two goals in the 67
th minute when she fired a shot and collected her own rebound that she put in.
The Royals increased the lead back to three in the 68
th minute before freshman
Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) scored her first career with an assist from senior
Marissa Surdy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) in the 70
th minute to finish the scoring.
Freshman
Sarah Weisenfluh (Factoryville, PA/Lackawanna Trail) made eight saves in goal.
The Lady Colonels led in penalty corners six to two.
Wilkes returns to action on Saturday when it heads to FDU-Florham for an 11:00 a.m. MAC Freedom contest.
