Wilkes Women's Soccer Opens Conference Play With 2-0 Win at Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Two first half corner kicks provided the opportunities that the Wilkes University women's soccer team needed to defeat host Delaware Valley University by a 2-0 score at Lipinski Field in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener for both teams Friday night.

Wilkes, the No. 9 team in the United Soccer Coaches Mid-Atlantic Poll, moved to 6-1-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in MAC Freedom games while Delaware Valley fell to 1-7-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the MAC Freedom.

The Lady Colonels opened the scoring at the 3:55 mark after a corner kick by senior Elena Denger (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) was headed by two defenders and then headed down by freshman Elise Brubaker (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy) to the foot of junior Nicolette Towlen (Ewing, NJ/Ewing). Towlen then tapped the ball past the Aggies goalkeeper from inside the six-yard box for her first goal of the season and the seventh of her career. It was the second assist of the season for Brubaker.

Wilkes widened the lead in the 26th minute on another corner kick. This time sophomore Haley Evans (Deptford, NJ/GCIT) played the ball into the six-yard box near freshman Catherine Gregoire (New Cumberland, PA/Trinity). An Aggies defender headed the ball but it went right to a waiting Denger who slammed home a shot from seven yards out. It was the second goal of the season for Denger and the third of her career.

The Lady Colonels did not allow a shot attempt by the Aggies in the contest and did not allow a goal for the fifth time in the last six games. Junior goalkeeper Courtney Stanley (Yardville, NJ/Steinert) was credited with her fourth shutout of the season.

Wilkes outshot Delaware Valley 20-0 and led in shots on goal 15-0. The Lady Colonels also held the 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Eight different players registered a shot on goal led by senior Ema Sabovic (Brodheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley)'s four.

The Lady Colonels return to the field for a non-conference game at Stockton University in Pomona N.J. on Tuesday, October 3 at 5:00 p.m.
