Wilkes Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to Marywood
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University men's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season on Sunday afternoon after dropping a 1-0 decision to Marywood University at Schmidt Stadium.
The physical contest began in the pouring rain and it looked as if the game was headed to a scoreless first half before Marywood (1-1) was able to find the net on a goal by Tom Caffari in the 44
th minute.
Earlier in the first half Wilkes (1-1) goalkeeper
Tim Gallagher (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) made two back-to-back great stops to keep the game scoreless. Gallagher made nine total saves in the game.
The Colonels' best opportunity to tie the game came in the 88
th minute when
Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) got off a good attempt but Marywood goalkeeper Michael Mejia was up to the task to provide the shutout victory to the Pacers. Mejia made eight saves.
Huff led all players with five shots on goal and
Kyle Bentz (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) added two more for Wilkes.
The Pacers held the 16-12 advantage in shots while the Colonels held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Wilkes committed 18 fouls to 14 for Marywood and five total yellow cards were issued.
Wilkes starts a four-game road trip on Tuesday, September 5 when they travel to the University of Valley Forge to play the Patriots in a non-conference game at 4:00 p.m.
