Early Strikes Propel Wilkes Men's Soccer to 3-2 Win in MAC Freedom Opener

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's soccer team struck for the first three scores en route to a 3-2 victory over Delaware Valley University in both teams' Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels improved to 1-0 in conference and 5-5 overall. The teams five wins is the most since securing nine victories in 2013.

Wilkes got on the board in the 18th minute when Kyle Bentz (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) beat the keeper to a 50/50 ball and deposited it into an empty net.

The Colonels doubled the lead in the 58th minute when Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) played a corner kick in before an Aggie defender headed it in past his keeper.

Huff extended the lead to 3-0 in the 68th minute when Alvaro Fernandez-Maldonado (Louisville, CO/Scranton) played a ball that Huff was able to shoot to the far corner from 18 yards out.

Delaware Valley gave Wilkes a scare with goals in the 78th and 90th minutes, but the Colonels were able to secure the victory.

Wilkes dominated for most of the contest, outshooting the Aggies 19-5 (12-3 on target).

Tim Gallagher (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) made one save for the Colonels.

Wilkes returns to the pitch on Wednesday when it will host Lancaster Bible College for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at Schmidt Stadium.
