Early Strikes Propel Wilkes Men's Soccer to 3-2 Win in MAC Freedom Opener
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Wilkes University men's soccer team struck for the first three scores en route to a 3-2 victory over Delaware Valley University in both teams' Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom opener on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels improved to 1-0 in conference and 5-5 overall. The teams five wins is the most since securing nine victories in 2013.
Wilkes got on the board in the 18
th minute when
Kyle Bentz (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) beat the keeper to a 50/50 ball and deposited it into an empty net.
The Colonels doubled the lead in the 58
th minute when
Camry Huff (Waynesboro, PA/Waynesboro) played a corner kick in before an Aggie defender headed it in past his keeper.
Huff extended the lead to 3-0 in the 68
th minute when
Alvaro Fernandez-Maldonado (Louisville, CO/Scranton) played a ball that Huff was able to shoot to the far corner from 18 yards out.
Delaware Valley gave Wilkes a scare with goals in the 78
th and 90
th minutes, but the Colonels were able to secure the victory.
Wilkes dominated for most of the contest, outshooting the Aggies 19-5 (12-3 on target).
Tim Gallagher (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) made one save for the Colonels.
Wilkes returns to the pitch on Wednesday when it will host Lancaster Bible College for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at Schmidt Stadium.
