Wilkes Women's Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches 3-1 in Altoona
ALTOONA, Pa. – The Wilkes University women's volleyball team dropped Saturday's tri-match action by 3-1 score lines to Penn State Behrend and host Penn State Altoona.
The Lady Colonels dropped the first match of the day by set scores of 25-21, 16-25, 15-25, and 20-25 to Penn State Behrend. They then fell by set scores of 25-27, 25-11, 23-25, and 20-25 to Penn State Altoona.
Wilkes is now 4-13 overall on the season. Penn State Behrend is 6-10 and Penn State Altoona is 8-8.
The Lady Colonels used a five-point scoring run in the first set against Behrend to grab a 12-7 lead. The points came on a Lions error, kills by sophomore
Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) and senior
Alexis Morgan (Walnutport, PA/Northampton), and two aces by sophomore
Juliet Betke (Poplar Grove, IL/Belvidere North). Wilkes was able to hold at least a three-point lead the rest of the set to win 25-21. The Lions then took the next three sets to win the match 3-1.
Morgan had 21 assists and 10 digs for a double-double. Senior
Kayley Schinski (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke) tied a career-high with 12 kills and added four blocks. Freshman
Erin Silverman (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) set a career-high with five assists. Mikovich had nine kills and 17 digs and Betke also had 17 digs.
Penn State Altoona took the first set in the day's second match but Wilkes responded with one of its best sets of the season. The Lady Colonels trailed 7-6 before going on a 19-4 run to win the second set 25-11. In the set, Wilkes had 14 kills and only two hitting errors on 32 total attacks for a .375 hitting percentage.
Wilkes held a 23-22 lead in the third set before Penn State Altoona scored the final three points to take the 2-1 lead in the match. The Lady Lions then won the fourth set 25-20 to take the match.
Mikovich had 18 kills and a career-best 27 digs to record her seventh double-double of the season. Also recording her seventh double-double of the year was Morgan with 47 assists and 16 digs. Her 47 assists tied a season-high.
Sophomore
Alex Ferrier (Cressona, PA/Blue Mountain) had 13 kills and a career-high eight digs. Senior
Madison Scarfaro (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) set a career-best with 12 digs and added eight kills while Schinski tied her career-high with 10 digs. Betke had 19 digs and sophomore
Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) had five kills and three blocks.
The Lady Colonels will return to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action, where they are currently 0-3, when they travel across town to play King's College at 7:00 p.m on Tuesday, October 3.
